Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) promote exchange and mobility within the scientific objectives of the Action, and allow Action members (especially early stage researchers) to visit universities and institutions of another Party of the COST Action to learn new techniques or methodologies, or to work on joint publications.
Karolina Rosiak visited Dublin in April. Here is what she had to say about her STSM experience:
"This STSM took place in the last week of April 2017 in Dublin’s Marine Institute of Education.
During my stay I worked with Dr Małgorzata Machowska-Kościak on our joint paper exploring the theme of language and culture socialization and affect through the subjective experiences of Polish migrants to Ireland and Wales.
Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004 resulted in thousands of Polish citizens migrating to the UK and the Republic of Ireland mainly in search for employment opportunities, which required them not only to learn a foreign language (English) but also socialize into new cultures.
Our paper analyzes language socialization of Polish migrants in two different linguistic environments.
The discussion on Poles in Ireland concentrates on the socialization towards English, i.e. the dominant language.
In Wales, however, we address aspect of language socialisation relating to the Welsh language, i.e. the minority language, rather than English.
We envisage that our study will contribute greatly to the discussion of how one socializes new languages and cultures, and how socialization processes influence the trajectories towards new-speakerness."
